The municipality's population density is 1.3 inhabitants per square kilometre (3.4/sq mi) and its population has increased by 5.9% over the previous 10-year period.In 2016, the chief of police for Vestlandet formally suggested a reconfiguration of police districts and stations. He proposed that the police station in Aurland be closed.
